About Jeff SmallwoodI'm a photographer, engineer, and self-proclaimed "geek" who works primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, including Southern Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay area. My photographic work covers a wide range of styles and techniques, including black & white, long exposures, portraits, landscapes/seascapes, and macro to name a few. My favorite and primary scenic shooting locations focus on the Chesapeake Bay watershed, from the mountains of the Appalachians and Shenandoah to the rivers and shorelines along the Bay itself. I was first exposed to photography in middle school. Starting with a Polaroid Big Swinger 3000 Land Camera and building a couple pinhole cameras, my love and passion for photography continued to progress over the years. I spent time in a dark room and experimented with B&W film processing and development, learning the manual exposure, dodge and burn techniques. Photography, art, and poetry continue to be my primary creative outlets. From the technical side of photography, I'm a strong believer in the digital darkroom; a user and advocate for many of the various tools that fill a need (Lightroom, Photoshop, Photomatix, Zerene, Nik, etc). Combining the manual, creative techniques used in the field and traditional darkrooms with the modern techniques of the digital environment can open up a world of possibilities. My photography has been published on websites, in magazines, calendars, books, and has been on display in various locations. Some of my work can currently be seen hanging in the hallways of the Prince Frederick campus of the College of Southern Maryland. Artwork is available for purchase, both as individual pieces and as carefully coordinated themed sets (for decorating a room or office). Traditional prints, canvases, standouts, and many other media formats (including metallic) are available. Please check out the online store or contact my directly if interested. In Summer 2012 I completed my first photo book titled "Dawn - Before the Day Begins" and at the beginning of 2013 I completed my second photo book "Home To Shadows". A selection of my work was also chosen and published in the Maryland Public Television 2014 "Maryland Outdoors" calendar. Locally I'm currently serving as President of the Calvert Photography Club. My blog is titled "Capture Life Through a Geek's Lens" and I also post photos on a regular basis on my Flickr page. |
